Olev Kork had the wonderful opportunity to speak to 9th grade students at Tartu Kesklinna School<\/strong> as part of the school\u2019s alumni month. He is sharing his thoughts and emotions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing in front of that classroom felt almost surreal \u2014 it seemed like just yesterday that I was sitting at those same desks, learning history. And yet, somehow, twelve years have already passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my talk, I decided to share three things I genuinely wish someone had told me when I was their age<\/strong>. They\u2019re simple ideas, but they can make a huge difference in how confidently a young person steps into the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Shadow as many people as you can. Seriously.<\/strong><\/mark><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re unsure what you want to do in the future, the best thing you can do is step into different worlds and observe them up close. Go and job shadow<\/em> people in different fields \u2014 marketing, design, hospitality, IT, construction, healthcare\u2026 absolutely anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more diverse your experiences, the clearer your path becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might discover something you love.
Or you might discover what you definitely don\u2019t<\/em> want to do \u2014 which is just as valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every conversation and every new contact can open doors you didn\u2019t even know existed. And the worst that can happen? You walk away knowing a little more about yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Be curious \u2014 and don\u2019t be afraid to reach out to people who seem \u201cahead\u201d of you.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re young, it can feel intimidating to ask experienced people for advice. Maybe they seem too successful, too smart, or too busy. Maybe you feel like you\u2019re \u201cnot ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the truth: most people are far kinder and more approachable than you think.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put your ego and insecurities aside for a moment and just reach out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Send a simple Instagram DM or email, something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cHi! I\u2019m a student at X school and I\u2019ve been following your work for a while. You seem really skilled in X field, and I\u2019d love to learn more. Would you be open to meeting for an hour to share your experience and give me some advice on how I could grow in this area?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019d be surprised how many people say yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One good conversation can change how you see your future, give you clarity, or even open opportunities you never imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. If you can \u2014 travel. Explore. Go see the world.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are countless youth organizations and NGOs that send young people abroad for short-term and long-term projects funded by the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, organizations like Noored \u00dchiskonna Heaks<\/strong> and many others offer youth exchanges where you can spend a week \u2014 or even several months \u2014 abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These experiences give you so much more than just travel photos:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • You build an international network of friends<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • You gain confidence and independence<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • You learn new skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • You start to understand the world from a broader perspective<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes, stepping outside your usual environment is exactly what you need to figure out who you want to become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the end\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If I could go back and talk to my 15-year-old self, I wouldn\u2019t give him a strict plan or a checklist of \u201cmust-dos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Instead, I\u2019d tell him to stay curious<\/strong>, talk to people, try different things, and keep an open mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Opportunities rarely fall into your lap.
    You create them by showing interest, asking questions, and being brave enough to take the first step.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
